Matthias Kohler, Gramazio & Kohler, Architektur und Digitale Fabrikation
Further authors: Fabio Gramazio, Silvan Oesterle, Ammar Mirjan and Axel Vansteenkiste, Gramazio & Kohler, Architektur und Digitale Fabrikation
ETH Zurich, Switzerland
Type of project: Materials, products and construction technologies
Start of construction: 2012
Financial concept: The development of a new formwork technology, aimed at free-form architecture, is funded by "EU FP7 Tailorcrete" (an EU research grant of USD 275,000). Based on the tendency of architectural design towards free-form geometries, this targets a potential annual market turnover of USD 1,000,000 to 10,000,000.
Technical data: The wax being used for fabricating formwork elements has a density of 930kg/m3, resulting in a weight of 40-100kg/m2 formwork. The wax formwork elements are dimensioned for a concrete pressure of 70kN/m2. The wax has a softening point of 75°C and Shore D hardness of 67 (comparable to PE). It can be endlessly reused.
Materials and methods: This cyclic process consists of: a robotically actuated free form mold, forming a (re)meltable wax negative, which is placed on-site as concrete formwork
